Why Use a Professional Yacht Broker?

1. Selling a Yacht

Selling a yacht through a broker typically comes with a ~10% commission. Depending on the size of your vessel, that’s real money. So… can you skip the broker and sell it yourself?

You can — but be prepared to take on everything that comes with it:

  • Setting a price that truly reflects your yacht’s specs, condition, and current market conditions;

  • Producing marketing materials including high-quality photo and video content;

  • Creating and managing listings across multiple platforms;

  • Running marketing campaigns;

  • Vetting potential buyers;

  • Handling showings;

  • Managing buyer due diligence;

  • Negotiating, handling legal paperwork, and closing the deal.

It’s a lot. Even if you handle all of the above, two common challenges remain:

  1. Buyers may not take a private listing as seriously without a professional broker involved, and

  2. Many buyers will still push for a discount—often around that same 10%—since they’ll likely use a broker when they sell in the future.

2. Buying a Yacht

On the buying side, working with a professional broker is a no-brainer — they’re typically paid by the seller. So why go it alone?

A good broker brings:

  • Access to comprehensive listing services and broker networks, including off-market opportunities;

  • An objective, professional assessment of your needs and suitable options;

  • Guidance through due diligence, negotiation, financing, closing, and title transfer;

  • Post purchase support including inspections, repairs and dockage, among others.
